This Time Next Year

Minnie Cooper (a person, not the car) is a London-based baker who makes pies for the less fortunate.

Born on New Year’s Day in 1990, she was originally supposed to be named Quinn Cooper. Sadly, while in the hospital, her mother’s birthing roommate stole it for her son.

Ever since that fateful day, Minnie has consistently had terrible luck on her birthday and been bullied for her name. So much so, she almost believes she’s been cursed ever since that boy took her name way back when.

Years later, she finds herself meeting her “birthday twin”, Quinn Hamilton, the boy from the hospital. Weirdly, she finds herself catching feelings for this charming, rich boy. They’re at different stages in life and both dating other people, but perhaps this boy can break Minnie’s streak of bad luck?

Setting:

London, England. Modern Day.

What I thought of the book:

Overall, this book wasn’t for me. I thought the author, Sophie Cousens, did a great job building the main characters, as we got to see their development over the years. This was achieved by jumping back and forth through different times in the lives. At times, Minnie and Quinn met each other unknowingly.

However, it seemed a little unrealistic to me and there were times where I felt the story dragged. It’s your typical romantic comedy and gave me Bridget Jone’s Diary vibes (perhaps because it’s based in London).

Who should read this book:

If you’re looking for a sweet, romantic comedy this one is for you. It’s about 300 pages it is a perfect weekend read.
